Hello! This is my ENG 4U Portfolio about my ISU novel, "The Professor and the Madman". My portfolio is in the perspective of feminist criticism. My chosen media for my portfolio are: Concept map, podcast, persuasive essay, and a blog post.
Thesis: In the novel “The Professor and the Madman”, Simon Winchester undervalues the roles of the women in the real life story, for Winchester gives essentially little to no detail to their characters, including the characters Ada Murray and Eliza Merrett. |

"The Professor and the Madman" Concept Map
My concept map is an analysis of the characters, mostly of their contribution to the OED, and the general role of the women during the 1800s (when the story takes place). I purposely divided the characters into minor and major characters, which allow the viewers to see the quite big roles of the women such as Ada Murray and Eliza Merrett who were very important in the story. This way, the audience will understand that perhaps these women should have been one of the major characters.
I believe a concept map is great for this because I can easily analyze the book in a very simple manner. My message of this concept map is very subtle, but it may be obvious after looking at the “Minor” and “Major” character category and the “women in the 1800s” category, that it is in the perspective of the feminist criticism.

Persuasive Essay - The Truth About the Contribution of Women
Here is the link to my persuasive essay!
"The Professor and the Madman": Persuasive Essay
I chose to do a persuasive essay because I believe it was the best type of essay that would prove my thesis most efficiently. It allows me to incorporate my emotions, or “pathos”, into my writing while still using logic, or “logos” to support it. A persuasive essay allows me to easily tie in my novel into my essay, and use my original thesis effectively to prove my argument.
